OK! I am stepping up on my preaching block. When most Americans think of Human Trafficking, they think it is in some country far away! The truth is more than 30 million men, women, and children are enslaved around the world so DON’T be naieve and think America doesn’t have a piece of that action!
For 10 years Trafficking in Persons Report ( a list of countries being monitered for the crime of modern day slavery) has been released by the US Department of State and in 2010 the United States was put on that list for the first time! What did the report say?
- The United States is listed as a source, transit and destination country for men, women, and children.
- More US citizens, both adult and children are found in sex trafficking than in labor trafficking.
- US citizen child victims of sex trafficking are often runaway and homeless youth.
- More Foreign National victims are found in labor trafficking than sex trafficking.
Definition of Sex Trafficking – the recruitment, harboring, transportation or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act, in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person forced to perform such an act is under the age of 18 years.
Definition of Labor Trafficking – the recruitment, harboring, transportation or obtaining of a person for the purpose of labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.
Sadly, Many victims trafficked into the United States do not speak and understand English and are therefore isolated and unable to communicate with service providers, law enforcement and others who might be able to help them.
Even more sad is with runaways becoming sex slaves, it is not that they are criminals or sexually devient. It is more the fact they are locked in closets, beaten, threatened of their life. It is out of FEAR they sell their bodies, not by choice.
Last year on Freedom Sunday, more than 2500 Churches in 45 countries raised their voices against modern day slavery. It is hoped that 6000 churches and groups will join for Freedom Sunday on February 26, 2012.
